An ordinary hair straightener allows a woman to change her look depending on the mood and occasion: create voluminous curls or make her hair perfectly smooth and straight. Its main purpose is to straighten hair, however, nothing prevents you from making a fashionable Hollywood wave or careless curls, exquisite curls or small curls with it. Curls with an iron for long hair are more stylish and shiny than using a curling iron: Ironing plates simultaneously smooth and twist the strand, giving it a natural glow.

What iron do you need?

Choose tourmaline or titanium coated plates - they are more modern, safer and less traumatic, in extreme cases, pay attention to ceramics (including improved ones with an ionizer). The first two coatings cope even with a hard type of hair - they curl it well and with high quality and give a long-lasting "curly" effect. It’s good if the “device” has the function of adjusting the temperature depending on the density and condition of the hair. Experts recommend choosing the following temperature regime according to the type of hair:

  • 160-180 degrees for thin or damaged, bleached hair;
  • 180-200 degrees for normal, not too thick, natural hair;
  • 200-220 degrees for dense, coarse and thick hair.

If we talk about the size of the ironing plates, then choose it depending on the thickness and length of the hair and the effect that you would like to get. Thin plates are suitable for working with thin hair, wide plates for thick or very long hair.

For long hair, a flat iron with wide plates and rounded edges will be the best choice, with which you can create both small and large curls.

How to make curls?

Creating a hairstyle begins with preparing the hair and washing it: it is on clean hair that the styling lasts a long time and looks decent. After washing, be sure to use a washable moisturizing balm or mask, and before drying and curling your hair, use a thermal protectant in the form of a spray (cream or gel will weigh down the hair, which can lead to quick frizz removal). Even if you do not use a hair dryer, you must completely dry your hair and only then begin the "hot" work.

Heat protectant can be applied immediately before using the impromptu curling iron, especially if you are not using a hair dryer. Such products protect the hairs from mechanical damage and additionally help to fix the hairstyle.

How to do:

  • Pre apply mousse or foam to dry hair to fix curls - the tool will extend the life of the hairstyle, especially if they are difficult to style, too heavy or naughty.
  • Divide your hair into 4-6 sections depending on their density and secure each of them with a crab or any other fixative.
  • Start spinning your curls from the lower sector from the back of the head to the temples. It is convenient to divide the head into two halves and work with each in turn.
  • Grab one strand with an iron, retreating 2-3 cm from the roots.
  • Turn the iron 180 degrees around its axis in the direction from the face and lead it vertically down, holding the tip with your free hand. Do the same with each strand.
  • After creating curls spray them with hairspray, fix the curls and fluff the hair at the roots with your fingers.

Curls can vary in size and shape. To wind small curls, take thin and narrow strands, to create natural large curls, separate the wide and thick parts. The wider and thicker the strand, the more natural the curling effect is, however, it is also less long-lasting. The structure of the hair plays a huge role in the quality of the curls: the denser and heavier the hair, the worse the styling holds on them, which means that you can’t do without secrets. Curling your hair with a flat iron is easy, but do not neglect additional styling and care products and choose them according to your hair type (usually manufacturers indicate recommendations on the package).

The silicone in the composition fills the grooves on damaged hairs, however, it noticeably makes them heavier, the “light” versions do not have a cosmetic effect and only fix the styling.

How to spin waves?

Beautiful waves look equally good in the evening and everyday look. They differ from curls in lightness and naturalness, and it turns out to be easier to make them yourself:

  • To create a Hollywood styling, you will need a flat iron with wide plates., if this was not found in the arsenal, take wide strands and run the “device” through the hair more slowly.
  • Try to make curls the same in all respects: take strands of the same width and fix them with plates at the same distance at the roots.
  • Necessarily comb each strand before using the iron.
  • To create a wave wind and guide each strand away from the face - this will make them even.
  • Pull your hair to one side fix lacquer hair.
  • Comb with wide sparse teeth gently comb the curlsstarting at the tips and holding them with your hands.
  • Tighten the comb curl at the roots and fix it with a clamp (approximately at the line of the first bend).
  • Grab the next section of hair with your fingers and brush it up, secure with clip. Should be in order 4-6 bends (and even more if the hair is very long), fixed with flat long clips to create an effect.

The wave looks good when the parting is done on the side. In the part where there is more hair and a wave is obtained. The opposite side with a smaller amount also needs to be decorated: smooth the curls with a comb, put it behind the ear and fix it with an invisibility.

Installation examples with step by step instructions

The first example is suitable even for the most naughty hair, which is difficult to style and does not hold its shape at all. Order of execution:

  • Divide them on the section and secure each with a clip.
  • Take a thin strand and wind it around your finger, press with a hairpin.
  • Now squeeze the resulting roller with an iron and hold for 2-3 seconds depending on the condition of the hair: the thinner it is, the less time you keep the plates closed.
  • Leave the invisible roller and continue working with the rest of the strands - fix them and warm them with an iron.
  • After the hair has cooled, you can remove the invisible ones and enjoy elastic curls.

The thinner you take the strand, the smaller the curls will turn out. To facilitate the task, you can pre-fix the strands with invisible ones and only then go through them with an iron.It is important not to miss a single roller and take strands of the same size for each of them.

Another master class is similar to the previous one and allows you to create small and elastic curls:

  • Divide hair into sections, sections into thin strands.
  • Take a strand and twist the curl: hold it at the root, turn the flat iron 180 degrees and slide it down to the tip.
  • Do not let go of the resulting curl, but form a ring and press it to your head, fix it with invisibility. Do the same with the rest of the strands and let them cool.
  • Remove invisible and spray some fixative hairspray over your hair. You can separate the strands with your hands and beat them a little at the roots.

Pigtails set the unusual shape of curls: moisten your hair with water and braid a few small and tight braids. Wait until your hair is completely dry and go through each braid with a heated flat iron. Move the “device” slowly and evenly so that each strand can warm up. Undo the braids and enjoy unusual lush curls.

"Beach curls" are made using this technology:

  • Divide your hair into sections.
  • Take a thin strand and twist it into a tourniquet.
  • Go over it with a hot iron from top to bottom, pressing the plates with your fingers.
  • You can bring the iron to the end or not touch the tips - then the styling will be more original.

For long and thin hair, voluminous styling is suitable: wind the strands on the iron both from the face and towards the face alternately. Such a careless approach will create the desired volumetric effect for thin hair.

An interesting idea is the effect of “broken” curls: wind a thin strand on a pencil and walk along it with a heated iron. Do the work with each strand and enjoy small, almost African curls.

Pro Tips

It is known that the frequent use of ironing has a negative effect on the condition of the hair: they become brittle, dull, split. Experts say that you can use an iron no more than 1-2 times a week, and every time after washing your hair, use a balm or mask to moisturize and nourish it. They also give a number of recommendations on how to make perfect curls at home:

  • To keep your hair healthy, use a heat protectant every time you use a hair dryer or flat iron. The secret of beautiful hair and the duration of styling lies in the constant care of them, so do not neglect masks for hair type (1-2 times a week) and conditioner after each wash (except for those days when the mask is used).
  • If the hair is too thin or damaged, choose the lowest possible temperature of the device - no more than 160-180 degrees.
  • For dense and thick hair, choose a temperature of 200-220 degrees and slow down the iron - this will allow the hair to take the form of curls and keep it.
  • To create natural curls take wider strands, and to create a "showy" effect - small ones.
  • Wind one strand only once. However, if it was not possible to create a curl the first time, return to it at the end of styling and in order not to lose that strand, “mark” it with an invisible one.
  • It is necessary to iron evenly - at the same pace for each strand and from the face. To make the curls the same, choose approximately the same hair width.
  • Work only with dry hair. If you run a hot iron through wet hair, there is a high risk of damage to the latter.
  • Before releasing the strand, let it cool right in your hand. - do not throw it immediately and hold it in a twisted form for 2-3 seconds.
  • Hold the flat iron with your fingers, and do not pinch it in the palm of your hand in order to maintain the mobility of the brush and turn the iron in the right direction.
  • Do not delay the iron on the strands: guide it evenly along the entire length and maintain approximately the same degree of pressure.
  • If the hair does not hold curls well, pre-spray each strand with hairspray from a distance of 40-50 cm.

Experts say that styling products can make your hair less attractive if you use it too much. For naturally oily hair, use powder or dry shampoo - distribute the product on the roots after creating curls, and fix the curls themselves with varnish, retreating as far as possible from the roots and focusing on the length. To keep your style vibrant and frizzy, use fixing products to a minimum, spraying the hairspray from a distance of half a meter from the hairstyle.
