Despite the fact that light jackets on synthetic winterizer have long become popular, drape will never go out of fashion. Drape coat gives solidity and elegance. In this article, we will talk about how to properly wash a drape coat at home.

Fabric Features

Such a material familiar to us as drape can be of various types. In addition to the use of natural raw materials - wool (the main raw material), cotton and flax, artificial and synthetic fibers are currently used to make this material.

For the manufacture of coats, this fabric is suitable due to its properties:

  • High material density.
  • Durability with proper care.
  • Resistant to atmospheric precipitation.
  • Protects well from the wind.
  • Does not deform or wrinkle.
  • Not subject to shedding and fading.

A drape is considered all-wool if it contains more than 85% wool. Such double-sided material belongs to the highest grade. Semi-woolen is such a drape, in which the wool content ranges from 30 to 85%. Due to the content of other fibers, this material becomes lighter and looser.

Before washing a drape coat, read the information on the product label. It usually says:

  • how can you clean the thing;
  • how to wash;
  • how to dry:
  • whether to iron.

Also on the clothes there is a special tag indicating what fibers the material consists of. All this information will help you properly care for your clothes. If washing the product is prohibited, you should not take the risk, you need to take the coat to the dry cleaner. On the label, the prohibition of washing the product is indicated by an icon in the form of a crossed out inverted trapezoid.

To be sure that it is washable, dampen a small area of the fabric on the inside. If you see that the paint is fading, it is forbidden to wash such a thing. If the label indicates the possibility of washing, then the drape coat can be washed even in an automatic machine.

In the washing machine

Use a special detergent for woolen and delicate fabrics. It is better if it is a liquid remedy. Do not use ordinary washing powder, as after washing with its use, whitish spots may remain on the material.

If you are washing dark-colored clothes, it is better to purchase a special detergent for black clothes. Do not put other laundry items into the drum.

Before putting your coat in the washing machine compartment, carefully check all pockets, fasten all buttons on the coat and turn it inside out. It is necessary to remove all metal parts from the coat that can damage the fabric. If the coat is zipped, it needs to be fastened. Unfasten or unfasten the fur collar and cuffs from the coat and place them in a special mesh bag for washing.

Turn on the desired mode in the washing machine: delicate or hand wash.Set the temperature indicated on the label, usually 30-40 degrees. If the spinning of the product is allowed, it must be done at a speed not exceeding 600 per minute. If spinning is prohibited, drain the water and dry the coat yourself.

You can wrap it in a large terry towel or sheet and thus remove excess moisture. Then the product is placed on a dry natural material on a flat horizontal surface in a straightened form.

When the coat is almost dry, it can be hung on a hanger. Do not leave it wet for a long time, it will acquire an unpleasant odor. In the same time do not dry the product near heating appliances or in the sun.

Manually

To make the product less subject to mechanical stress, it can be washed at home by hand. First of all, check the pockets and unfasten the patches. Due to the large size, it is most likely impossible to wash the coat in a basin, so we wash it in a bath with warm water at 30 degrees, where liquid detergent for wool and delicate fibers is pre-dissolved.

You can use baby shampoo instead of detergent. Do not rub or wring out the product strongly, as the coat may lose its shape.

If the product is heavily soiled, you can pre-soak it for half an hour and try to remove the dirt by gently walking over it with a brush. Rinsing is performed several times until the water is clear of dirt and detergent. You need to let the water drain completely while the thing is in the bath, then dry it by wrapping it in a terry cloth. It can be changed several times to better remove moisture from the product.

Before hanging the coat on a hanger, to prevent its deformation, lay it out to dry on a soft material on a horizontal plane. When laying down the coat, smooth out any folds, collar, pocket flaps, and other details. If there are any glued parts on the clothes, then it is forbidden to wash it in any way. As a result of getting wet, the parts may come off, and the thing will become unusable.

It often happens that there is only a little soiling on outerwear, this usually happens in the area of the collar, cuffs, pockets and hem. It is better to wash such products locally.

To do this, it is necessary to moisten the contaminated areas with a pre-prepared solution of detergent and leave for a short time. Then you can lightly rub these places with a brush in a circular motion. Then remove the cleaning solution with a damp cloth and blot the moisture with a dry cloth. Hang your coat on a coat hanger and air dry.

There are folk ways to clean the collar of a coat. If it gets dirty, then it can be cleaned with a crumb of black bread. Just rub the collar and the problem will disappear.

Do not use this method if your coat is white.

A heavily soiled collar can be cleaned with salt and ammonia. Make a mixture in a ratio of 1 to 4 and clean the collar with a napkin soaked in this composition.

dry method

If the coat cannot be washed in water, you can dry clean it. First of all, you need to rid the coat of dust manually or with a vacuum cleaner with a special nozzle.

If there are pellets or pet hair on the item, you can remove them with a special brush with adhesive tape. There are special machines for removing pellets. You should not remove them manually, this can ruin the material.

To get rid of a greasy stain, it can be covered with chalk, starch, talc or salt for 2 hours. After the grease has been absorbed into the powder, brush it off with a dry brush.

If you are going to remove the stain with gasolinecheck the reaction on the inside of the coat first. If successful, use a cotton pad soaked in gasoline to clean the desired area from the edge to the middle. Change discs as often as possible, then use a damp cloth to remove any remaining gasoline.

Read the label before ironing your coat. Set the desired temperature on the iron. When ironing a drape coat, it is best to use the steam function. If it is not provided for in your device, then it can be replaced by ironing the product through a damp natural fabric, such as chintz or gauze, folded in several layers.
