How to wash pillows at home?
All accessories that come into contact with human skin need regular cleaning. This also applies to bed linen, and, of course, pillows. Caring for them is especially important, as they come into contact with a person's face every night. Dust, skin particles, sweat, and other contaminants all accumulate in bedding and can lead to skin and breathing problems if not properly cleaned.
It is necessary for pet owners to wash memory foam pillows in time if they allow their pets to sleep on the bed. During operation, the pillow loses its aesthetic appearance, overall shape and may begin to exude an unpleasant odor. In addition, some types of fillers of these products are a "magnet" for small mites.
Types of fillers
First you need to figure out what types of fillers are. This will help determine the type of bed linen and the conditions under which pillows should be washed:
- Down pillows. They are very soft, able to warm for a long time in the cold season.Most often, the down of birds such as duck, swan, loon and goose is used. The down pillow retains its shape for a long time, as it is quite elastic. It is worth considering the high cost of this filler. In addition, bird down can cause allergies in humans, which is a contraindication for the exploitation of this type of allergy sufferers. Natural down is a favorite habitat for some insects.
- Pillows with buckwheat husks. They are very useful for the human musculoskeletal system. They adapt to the shape of the head, so they are ideal for people suffering from scoliosis or problems with the cervical vertebrae. This type of filler is ideal for the hot season, as the head does not sweat at all. It should be noted that pillows made of buckwheat husks are heavy.
- Sheep's wool. Pillows made of this type of wool are light, they have the ability to retain heat for a long time. Wool also has a therapeutic effect: it is great for people with joint pain or rheumatic diseases.
- Bamboo. This type is becoming more and more popular in the modern Russian market due to its properties. It is ideal for allergy sufferers, it is highly hygroscopic, that is, it perfectly absorbs moisture. In addition, the antibacterial properties of this filler prevent the growth of bacteria in it.
- polyester. Polyester pillows quickly restore their shape when subjected to mechanical action. It is a hypoallergenic synthetic material that is very easy to wash.
- Sintepon. Well-known synthetic material. Syntepon pillows are soft and do not cause allergies. The only disadvantage of this filler is fragility.
- Holofiber. Filler ideal for allergy sufferers. The material is not picky in operation, so that products made from it will last a long time.
- Latex. Products from this material have an acceptable price. It perfectly passes air, is useful for people with problems of the musculoskeletal system (osteochondrosis, rheumatism, joint pain). Latex has antibacterial properties, as a result of which it is an unfavorable environment for the life of bacteria and small parasitic insects. In addition, latex does not make any sounds during mechanical action on it, it is very durable. With proper care, a latex product can "live" up to 10 years. The disadvantages of the filler include a specific smell. In addition, latex can cause an allergic reaction due to the substances that make up its composition.
- cotton wool. Cotton pillows are soft and light, but have a number of disadvantages. They are short-lived, hard to endure washing, as the filler falls into clods. Such pillows are contraindicated for people suffering from allergies.
Orthopedic pillow and sofa products made of polyester or camel hair can be easily cleaned at home.
Can it be washed in a machine?
To carry out washing in an automatic machine, you should purchase special covers and put them on the pillow. In addition, you can use an old pillowcase, and then sew it up so that it does not tear.
natural down
First, divide the fluff into equal parts, place them in bags. After washing, you just need to collect all the clean parts of the fluff together. This will make washing more efficient and accurate, moreover, in parts of the fluff we dry ten times faster.In the absence of an unnecessary pillowcase, you can sew gauze bags yourself, but this task is quite painstaking, since the bags need to be made small.
If you put all the filler in one big bag, then the drying time will increase noticeably, and the filler may acquire a putrid odor. Each bag needs to be about half filled, after which it is necessary to sew them tightly.
The fluff will not seep through the gauze if you fold it in 3-4 layers.
After cooking, place the bags in the drum, pour the detergent into the special section and turn on the wash cycle with an extra rinse. At the end of the wash cycle, hang wet bags on the balcony. To avoid the formation of downy clumps, you need to shake the bags regularly, then they will dry faster, and the filler will not have time to acquire an unpleasant odor.
artificial down
The filler is washed in a similar way at 50-60 degrees.
Synthetics
You need to knock out dust from synthetic pillows before classic washing in a typewriter, otherwise the result will unpleasantly surprise you: the dust left inside the filler will turn into ugly stains. After normal washing, it is recommended to use an additional rinse, then you need to remove the pillow from the tank and dry it. For a synthetic winterizer, you need to choose a temperature not higher than 40 degrees, in addition, synthetic winterizer pillows may not “survive” the spin cycle, so it’s better to wring them out manually.
The synthetic winterizer will not lose its shape if 3-4 tennis balls are placed in the tank with the product. If there are no balls, then you will have to level the filler yourself.
holofiber
The material can withstand washing temperatures of about 70 degrees.
Antistress
This pillow can also get dirty.It should be borne in mind that pillows made from organic materials (for example, from buckwheat husks, berries or seeds) categorically do not tolerate washing, but if your pillow consists of synthetic balls, then everything is much simpler. If you only need to wash the pillowcase, you will have to open it, carefully remove the balls, transfer them to another place and wash the pillowcase.
If you want to preserve the integrity of the pillow, wrap it with several layers of fabric, place it in the machine and wash at temperatures up to 40 degrees in the minimum speed mode. If it gets dirty, fill it up, then, in addition to the pillowcase, you will have to wash it too. Pour the balls into a container and wash them with soap or detergent by hand.
Bamboo
Due to the ability to repel dirt, a bamboo product does not need to be washed so often. Sometimes just cleaning it is enough. The only problem that can arise with this type of cleaning is the size of the pillow, for example, when it does not fit in the washing machine drum. Usually such products are made in a very large size. If this problem does not arise, place the pillow in the automatic machine, add a little powder and set the wash cycle to 30 degrees.
Spinning can damage the pillow, so wring out the item by hand without twisting the material. Due to the remarkable properties of bamboo, dirt is quickly removed from it. It is worth remembering that in order to preserve the beneficial healing and antibacterial agents of bamboo filler, chemicals and ironing should be avoided, otherwise they will disappear, despite the fact that the pillow remains beautiful and lush.
Thus, at home in the washing machine, you can wash almost all types of products.
How to wash by hand?
At home, you can clean any stains, even complex ones such as blood, oil, and the like.
Down
The pillow should be washed in such a way that the fluff does not stray into lumps, and at the same time the dirt is well washed off. The washing algorithm is as follows:
- Prepare a basin of water at 40 degrees. Water should be mixed with soap or powder.
- Spread out the pillow. So that the fluff does not scatter around the room, immediately place it in the basin. If the basin is not enough, fill a few more with soapy water. The main thing - do not try to fit too much fluff into the container, otherwise it will not be able to wash and dry well.
- Leave the fluff to soak for 1.5-2 hours. During this time, all the dirt will dissolve in the water.
- Drain the water from the basin and rinse the filler under running water. For this, it is more convenient to use a colander. Cover the water drain hole with a special mesh so that the material does not clog the drain pipe.
- Prepare a new detergent solution in which to thoroughly wash all the down with your hands.
- Rinse the down several times under running water. After that, you just need to dry it.
Latex
The latex product must be washed by hand only. Add a minimum amount of detergent and adjust the temperature to 40 degrees. Rinse latex in cool water. It is not necessary to wring out the pillow with brute force, it is enough to wrap it with a dry towel - it will absorb excess moisture. Latex is a fragile material, and in order to prolong its life, it is worth minimizing wet procedures.
If you have the opportunity to treat such a pillow with steam, by all means use it.
Steaming is a great alternative to regular washing. This type of treatment not only kills bacteria, but also refreshes bedding:
- Hang the pillow vertically.
- Steam thoroughly twice.
- When the pillow is dry, fluff it up.
- Put on a pillowcase.
From holofiber
Hollofiber is also well washed by hand:
- To wash holofiber, use a gel-like washing liquid. Washing water should be barely warm. Soak the pillow for 1.5-2 hours.
- Do not twist the pillow when wringing, wring it out carefully. After wringing, rinse the product in lukewarm water.
- After washing, hang the pillow to dry.
From synthetic winterizer
Products from synthetic winterizer are washed in the same way as from holofiber. The synthetic winterizer falls off in clods, so you need to constantly beat it.
from bamboo
You can also wash the pillow with bamboo filler by hand. Washing rules are as follows:
- The water temperature should be around 30 degrees.
- Strongly foaming products are best avoided. Laundry soap is ideal for bamboo.
- Rinse the pillow carefully after washing. Dry it on a horizontal surface, laying it on clean towels.
How to dry properly?
To dry the synthetic product evenly, it is necessary to shake it periodically so that lumps do not form. Hang a pillow at one corner. Shake it every 2-3 hours, otherwise a musty smell or mold may appear. The pillow will dry in about a day. The larger the pillow, the longer it takes to dry, so a day is only an approximate drying time. You can also dry the pillow in the washing machine drum.
The product made of bamboo dries horizontally, it can not be hung. Straighten the material constantly.Otherwise, the filler will lose its properties and turn into unaesthetic lumps. Anti-stress pillows should also be dried on a horizontal surface at room temperature. If you have washed the balls that fill this type of pillow, you must dry them completely to avoid rotting or mold.
It is advisable to dry holofiber pillows on a horizontal surface, constantly turning them over to speed up the process of evaporation of unnecessary moisture. Latex pillows are dried only in the fresh air. Under no circumstances should this material be machine washed or dried. Products made of artificial down are dried in a dryer or naturally on a horizontal surface.
Tips and advice for care
Here are some helpful tips to help make your pillow care as easy as possible:
- fluff down bedding regularly;
- it is better to limit the amount of sunlight on feather pillows. From an excess of sun, the fluff becomes brittle, therefore, the elasticity of the product is lost;
- Try to limit the access of pets to your pillows. Pillows should be kept as clean as possible. It is better to buy special soft beds for your pets, and they will most likely lose interest in your bed. Sofa products can also be used as a couch;
- regular hygienic cleaning of pillows will help to avoid the appearance of bed mites;
- if the pillow exudes an unpleasant odor, dents have formed on it, and the filler has fallen off, then the pillow needs to be changed. Using a poor-quality product can lead to skin rashes, headaches and lead to chronic sleep deprivation.
Take care of bedding, because a comfortable bed is the key to healthy sleep, without which it is impossible to imagine a happy life.
