How to remove marker marks from different surfaces: methods and recommendations
Now almost every house has markers. Children's pranks or adults' forgetfulness often lead to stains from their ink on various surfaces. It is quite difficult to withdraw them, but it is possible, there are several ways for this.
Product types
Before you start removing a stain from a marker, you need to figure out exactly what kind of marker it was made of. There are felt-tip pens and markers. A felt-tip pen is a stationery item that is used to write exclusively on paper. Inside it is a reservoir impregnated with water-based paint, which flows down to the porous material tip, which we write with. If you write with a felt-tip pen on metal or plastic, then its paint will blur and be easily erased.
The marker is designed to write on any surface. This is a kind of felt-tip pen, the paint of which is made on an alcohol basis, it is not washed off with water and does not spread. There is also a permanent marker, it is resistant to various environmental factors, thanks to which it remains on surfaces for a long time. In addition, acrylic or oil-based paints are used for markers, which are used mainly by artists.
Knowing what you're dealing with can help you determine exactly what's best for dealing with pollution.
Tools used
Depending on what kind of marker the thing was damaged, it is worth choosing a cleaning agent. The most commonly used are:
- Ethanol. It is advisable to use pure alcohol, but if one is not available, an alcoholic beverage with an alcohol content of more than 45 percent will do.
- Water or soap solution.
- Acetone or nail polish remover.
- Powdered baking soda.
- Melamine sponge or "magic eraser", which is sold in home improvement departments and stores.
- White toothpaste without additives.
- WD-40 aerosol available at automotive stores.
- Household marker for removing stains, produced by manufacturers of household chemicals.
- Office eraser.
- Cream for sun protection.
- Aerosols, such as deodorant or hairspray.
The type of soiled surface also influences the choice of stain remover. Some materials may not withstand strong formulations or intense friction. Therefore, it is worth starting cleaning with the simplest means.
Removal from non-porous hard coatings
Non-porous hard surfaces - tiles, plastic, metal, kitchen countertops, glass, tile, linoleum and more. These materials are quite resistant to any impact, and wiping the marker off of them will not be such a difficult task. You can use almost all of the above tools:
- Felt-tip streaks can be easily removed from everywhere with plain water by adding a little soap.
- With a marker, things are more complicated. If it needs to be cleaned off plastic or kitchen countertops, rubbing alcohol is great. It should be applied to a cotton pad or cotton cloth and wipe the surface until the stain is eliminated.
- In the case of chronic pollution, the same actions are performed using nail polish remover.
- White spirit will help to wash off stains from a painted refrigerator, other metal interior item or a car. After wetting a rag or sponge with it, it is necessary to wipe the drawing until it disappears, then, in order to avoid streaks, use a dry cloth.
- Motorists are familiar with an aerosol such as WD-40. It is designed to remove stains not only from metal.
A marker dropped on the floor can damage the flooring. For cleaning linoleum, it is better to choose a combination of baking soda and toothpaste. They must be mixed one to one and treated with a brush or sponge with an abrasive. After 10-15 minutes, the paste is washed off. If necessary, repeat the procedure. You can remove stains from the tile by any method, since it is resistant to almost all of the above means.
If the child decides to “decorate” the TV screen, glass or mirror, then in order not to damage them, use soda with toothpaste or sunscreen. Apply to contaminated area, rub a little and rinse.
An even better way is to get a melamine sponge and just wipe the dirt until it disappears.
Cleaning features
Removing marker marks on hard surfaces is not as difficult as in the case of soft and porous ones. Clothes, wood, upholstered furniture, wallpaper and carpets - all this is easy to spoil. Aggressive products can remove the marker stain along with the paint on the materials, may corrode or damage it. Therefore, for each type of coating there are certain rules for cleaning.
Furniture
It is quite difficult to choose a product for wooden furniture and boards, especially if the structure of the tree is preserved and minimally processed, since the paint from the marker penetrates deep inside. It can help here tea tree oil. You can buy it in pharmacies or cosmetic stores. It is enough to put a couple of drops on a cotton pad, lubricate the traces, and after a couple of minutes rub it hard. The remaining oil is removed with a dry cloth. Sunscreen will also work, but it should not be left on for long periods of time as it can damage woodwork.
For lacquered doors or a table, the same method or application will do. alcohol, as well as more gentle ways. For example, you can clean a contaminated area with a liquid detergent, a solution of ammonia and a teaspoon of soda, or with the same melamine sponge. Another tool can be a clerical eraser - just rub the strips from the marker with it.
fabrics
Soiled things or upholstered furniture with fabric upholstery are the items that housewives are most afraid of.
Upholstered furniture made of fabric is cleaned with simple steps:
- the stain is rubbed with a cloth dipped in hydrogen peroxide,
- then wipe with another rag with alcohol or strong alcohol and remove the stain,
- solution is removed with a damp cloth and excess moisture is impregnated with a dry one.
Marker marks can be removed from clothes with lemon juice. A few drops are applied to the damaged area and left for a while until the stain from the marker disappears. After that, the item must be washed as usual. White things are easiest to save by bleaching, soaking them for a time sufficient to remove stains, but no more than indicated in the instructions for use, so as not to spoil the material.
Delicate tissues will not tolerate every cleansing, even lemon juice is used for them, diluted in a 1: 1 ratio with water. Satin wardrobe items will be freed from stains by a mixture of lemon juice and borax in a teaspoon and in a tablespoon - milk and vinegar 9%. It is applied for about 10-15 minutes, then washed and washed. Thick fabrics, such as terry towels, will withstand alcohol and acetone.
Manufacturers of cleaning products in the fight against stains come up with new options. One of them is a marker or pencil for removing stains. They need to lubricate the fabric and leave for the specified time, then wash with a stain remover of the same or another brand.
Wallpaper
Wallpaper marker seems like an inconceivable task to clean, but there is an option. It is recommended to apply hydrogen peroxide from the first aid kit. With movements from the periphery to the center without excessive pressure, so that the paint does not flow, apply the solution to the wall with a cotton pad and leave for a while, after which the residues should be removed with a damp cloth.
If this method does not work, you can try to clean the walls oxygen stain remover.
It is necessary to dilute it in water with a temperature above 40 degrees and wipe the wallpaper. Wash off after 15-20 minutes. The alcohol marker can also be wiped off with lemon juice mixed with alcohol, as well as white toothpaste, preferably with a whitening effect. The oil marker will be rubbed off with oil. You can also iron the soiled area through the landscape sheet.
Carpet
A variety of carpet types, pile heights and materials can complicate the cleaning process. The first thing to try is alcohol or alcohol wipes. You need to press the fabric with it and let it soak in. If after the first time at least some result is visible, then the procedure must be repeated until all unnecessary is eliminated.
Alcohol can be substituted hairspray. Spray onto desired area and wipe with a dry cloth. If positive, wash the carpet with water and dry with paper towels. White vinegar applied to carpet can also dissolve the marker. In especially neglected cases, these methods can be combined with each other.
Leather
It seems that removing any dirt from the skin is easy, but the marker is not the case. Light soiling on furniture or shoes will probably be removed with an aqueous solution or acetone. In difficult cases, the main method for removal is hairspray. After spraying, it must be rubbed to remove the stain and cleaned with a damp cloth. The second is alcohol or any toilet water, perfume, cologne. They should only be cleaned with a cotton swab or cloth, do not use sponges for washing dishes.
Other surfaces
It is quite difficult to wipe the marker from rubber, for example, the soles of shoes, it eats into a porous surface and is difficult to be affected by cleaning agents. However, you can start with acetone or a melamine sponge, rub the surface thoroughly and rinse with water. Another option - aerosol deodorant, it is sprayed and rubbed, left for a while, then a scouring powder or a simple soapy solution is used.
Another surface can be considered the skin of the hands - it is often stained with markers. And if a water-based marker can be simply washed with soap and water, then an alcohol marker cannot be removed so easily.
Adults will be helped by ordinary alcohol wipes. For children, a more gentle option is needed. You should take vegetable oil or petroleum jelly, apply it on the skin, rub it in and wait 5-7 minutes, rinse with water, repeat if necessary.
Tips
We highlight the following:
- Start cleaning with the least aggressive cleaners.

- Scouring powders, baking soda, and toothpaste should be used on hard-to-scratch surfaces.
- Any tool must be tested on an invisible or inconspicuous area.
- When cleaning carpets, do not rub the place of contamination, so as not to smear the paint over a large area.
