How to wash mounting foam?
For construction and repair, mounting foam is very actively used today. Today, it is an indispensable tool for filling voids, which provides tightness and thermal insulation where it is needed. But when using foam, its particles sometimes get on clothes, skin, as well as various surfaces in the room where repair and construction work is carried out. It is not so easy to wipe off and tear off the frozen material. Although there are means and ways to solve this problem.
Material Specifications
When ordinary people talk about polyurethane foam, they imagine an aerosol can, which has a special composition with a soft consistency. This composition is a mixture of propylene (gas) and the so-called prepolymer. Flowing out of the cylinder, this material hardens, turning into polyurethane foam due to the polymerization process.
A valuable quality of the material is its viscosity. Thanks to it, the foam reliably fastens various materials - wood, concrete, plaster solutions. It is this property of the sealant that becomes a problem if it gets in the wrong place.
Removal Tools
Mounting foam can be removed by various means, including special formulations designed to eliminate material residues from various surfaces.
The cleaner is:
- for uncured foam;
- for dry material.
It is better to purchase funds for one case and for another, moreover, from the same manufacturer, the foam of which is used during installation in a particular case. So the probability of cleaning traces of material from a particular surface will increase.
It should be borne in mind that fresh foam cleaners have a more gentle composition for surfaces than those that remove cured sealant. If you quickly use such a remover, and then wash the affected area with soapy water, then there will be no harm to the item. With the help of special products, you can wipe off the remnants of foam from leather, fabric, lacquered and laminated furniture.
Small fresh stains can be easily removed with special wipes soaked in a cleaning agent. There are also special containers and cylinders with a cleaning compound for processing tools. The cylinder is wound on the gun and clears it when the trigger is pressed.
When applying cleaners for dried foam, you need to do it in a room in which a window is open. You should also use special clothing (or one that you don’t mind getting dirty) and gloves. Do not allow the sealant remover to get on unprotected skin, and even more so in the eyes.
The most effective of these products greatly soften the old foam, but the surface from which the cured polyurethane foam can no longer be simply wiped off can also suffer. A special agent will ruin the lacquered product or PVC.
In addition to branded ones, you can use the compositions that are in the medical kit or just in everyday life. Among them stand out:
- medical alcohol;
- petrol;
- "White Spirit";
- vinegar;
- acetone;
- salt;
- drug "Dimexide";
- vegetable oil;
- soap.
How to wash off different surfaces?
Often, foam during work is on unprotected areas of the body, especially on the hands. Such incidents do not cause much concern, because after some time the foam itself will leave along with the epithelium. But sometimes, for various reasons, it is necessary to immediately cleanse the skin of the hands. And there are various ways to do this:
- If you do not tolerate exposure to chemicals due to allergies or dermatitis, you will have to remove the foam mechanically. Gradually scrape it off with a knife. The use of scrubs and hard sponges will also speed up the process of releasing the skin from traces of sealant. After such washing, you need to treat your hands with cream.
- To remove mounting foam from the skin, use salt water. After immersing your hands for five minutes in a container with this liquid, rub them with a pumice stone.
- If the foam has not yet set, even ordinary soapy water can help, where you need to put your hands down and rub them with a washcloth or sponge.
- You can use rubbing alcohol, gasoline or acetone by wetting a cotton pad with one of these products and rubbing the stained skin. After this kind of treatment, hands should be washed and smeared with baby cream.
- An excellent and at the same time harmless means of getting rid of traces of sealant is heated vegetable oil. It needs to be rubbed into the skin, wait a bit and rinse. Sometimes, in addition, you have to sprinkle the soiled hands with crumbs of washing powder, lather and rinse with plenty of water.
- If the foam has eaten too much, you will have to smear the skin with a greasy cream and rub it properly with a stiff brush.
Worse when you have to remove the foam from the hair. Be prepared for the fact that some strand in this situation will have to be cut. It is possible that even after a forced trip to the hairdresser, the use of a chemical agent will be required. The only way out is to use Dimexide.
This synthetic drug for external use with analgesic and antibacterial action is inexpensive and is successfully used in everyday life, and not only for its intended purpose. Against the background of conventional solvents, it is not so terrible for the human body. However, it belongs to the category of strong acting. The composition is absorbed very quickly.
After treatment with the agent, the hair should be properly washed and a cosmetic mask should be made, since under the influence of "Dimexide" their structure is disturbed. The use of the drug can lead to hair loss and irritation of the scalp.
It is not uncommon when, during the installation of a window or repair in a room, the sealant gets on the window plastic profile or window sill. Do not clean such surfaces with hard brushes and powders. So you can permanently spoil the appearance of the window. To get rid of unwanted marks, use mineral spirits, vegetable oil, or an assembly gun cleaner.
You can also use Dimexide. You should try to carefully scrape off the foam with a knife, and then wipe the affected surface with a piece of cotton wool, heavily soaked with Dimexide. After that, leave the cotton wool on the contaminated place for five to ten minutes. During this time, the remaining sealant should become soft.Now it takes quite a bit of effort to completely remove his traces.
If flakes of mounting compound have fallen on the glass, you can remove it with a razor or a solvent like acetone or nail polish remover. Corrosive substances must not get on the plastic parts of the window structure. This will damage the coating.
If the window has a wooden sill, set the gun cleaner and solvents aside. It is better to use ordinary vegetable oil. It, when heated, will become an indispensable tool when you need to get rid of traces of foam vinyl wallpaper, door, furniture under polishing. It is necessary to take a rag, soak it in oil and rub the place of contamination properly.
If the foam has already hardened, after wiping the affected area, leave an oiled rag on it and wait half an hour. After that, you need to wipe the surface again until the final disposal of the sealant.
The mounting foam is well washed off from the tile with vinegar. You need to take a napkin, dip it in an undiluted acidic solution and wipe dirty marks from the tile.
If the "victim" of the foam was the floor, you will also have to use one of the above means. For example, carpet can be cleaned with Dimexide, kerosene or gasoline.
It is easy to remove foam from smooth linoleum. It is enough to let it dry, and then tear it off. But if there is an indented pattern on the coating, it is better to use white spirit, acetone. The agent is applied to the foam, and then the remaining sealant is scraped off with a chisel or knife.
If there is no caustic agent at hand, put a wet napkin or towel on the remains of the sealant after the main part of the “growth” is removed. After twelve hours, the stain can be washed off without any extra effort.
The sealant is removed from the laminate with vegetable oil. This is the easiest way. If there is a liquid for flushing mounting guns, then you can use it. But "Dimexide", acetone or plain water is better not to use. Prolonged contact with water will cause the laminate to swell.
Ordinary wood flooring and parquet, as well as solid wood furniture with lacquer coating, solvents or Dimexide can be harmful. So it is better, as far as possible, to remove the remnants of the foam mechanically, and wipe off what has eaten too much with warm oil. If the foam is fixed on a wooden floor that has not yet been varnished or painted, it is enough to use sandpaper.
It is unpleasant when the sealant gets on clothes or furniture upholstery. Instead of fussing around trying to remove the liquid foam right away, it’s better to wait until the lump has completely hardened and tear it off. If the fabric has a long pile, it is possible that part of it will have to be sacrificed. Wet a clean cloth thoroughly with salt water and place it on the stain for several hours so that the sealant has time to soften. When it loosens, carefully remove it from the item.
Woven material with a smooth structure is washed with kerosene, gasoline or the same Dimixide. For denim, as well as for artificial leather, white spirit is useful.
It's good when furniture has removable covers. Such a thing, like clothes, can be soaked for twelve hours and then washed. This will help get rid of traces of sealant.
Useful tips for all occasions
As practice shows, in most cases it is difficult to erase mounting foam from a particular surface. Any problem is easier to prevent than to solve.Therefore, never be lazy to wear special clothing, a hat and gloves when working with sealant. Also, do not neglect the need to cover the furniture and floor with polyethylene, old newspapers or some other protective material.
It is much easier to remove all this and put it away at the end of the work than to scrape off the frozen foam from interior items or even ruin some things.
Before using any cleaning fluid on hard surfaces, you can try to go without any chemicals. If you quickly notice that foam flakes have fallen, for example, on a varnished floor or laminate, you need to wait a bit until the substance hardens to a “rubber” state that no longer sticks to your hands, and, holding one edge of the lump, pull it up. The foam should come off easily.
When a cleaner is no longer necessary, but there is doubt that it will not damage the material that you want to get rid of sealant residues, first do a test for resistance to substances that are part of the chemical. Drop on the surface in the place where the traces of processing in any case will be invisible. Wait five or ten minutes. If nothing terrible has happened, feel free to act.
When using a gun cleaner or any solvent, use a white cloth or paper towel. Other fabrics and sponges should be checked for color fastness. If this is not done, there is a high risk of leaving colored stripes on the surface of materials such as PVC profiles instead of foam marks, which will be difficult to wash off.
