When going on a trip or a business trip by plane, most people try to get as familiar as possible with the rules for carrying certain items on board. So, often people who are used to drinking their favorite drink at a comfortable temperature everywhere take a thermos with them. We will learn from this article about whether it is possible to take a thermos in hand luggage on an airplane.

Basic rules for all passengers

When flying with you, not all transported items are allowed to be taken with you. Something must be checked in as baggage, and some items can be taken with you on board the aircraft, that is, in hand luggage. Of course, each airline has the right to set its own restrictions on the transport of certain items in the cabin. However, regarding the presence of a thermos with food or a favorite drink in a purse or backpack, there is a ban approved at the legislative level.

According to established standards, it is allowed to take liquids with you on board the aircraft in a total amount of no more than a liter, and it must be bottled in transparent bottles with a capacity of no more than 100 ml. To facilitate the process of passing through the inspection, it is better to pack all bottles in a transparent bag with a zipper, which can be purchased at an office supply store.

Such transportation features also include all pasty, creamy substances, canned food, jam, honey, shampoo, aerosol cans and even red caviar. This rule does not apply to liquid products purchased no more than a day ago from a duty-free shop. Such precautions are taken to prevent terrorist attacks during flights. That's why a thermos with a drink that is not visible in this container cannot be transported like this.

In addition, the metal body of the vessel is of great interest to airport security personnel, since banned substances can be hidden in the walls of the vessel.

Such restrictions do not at all mean the inability to enjoy a cup of aromatic coffee or quench your thirst with cool mineral water during the flight. On board flight attendants are always ready to help and serve the desired drink in sufficient quantity and at a certain price.

Exceptional cases for transporting a filled thermos

If, along with adult passengers, small children who need special baby food go on a trip, airline employees go to meet them. The thermos can contain both a portion of food already prepared for the baby, and boiled water of the right temperature for preparing the mixture. Usually, security officers treat passengers with babies more condescendingly, however, when flying to another country, its rules should also be taken into account. Also, you should not be too zealous and collect too much food for the child in hand luggage, it is enough to take the amount from the calculation of the flight time.

In addition, an exception may be the need to take certain medications with you, which require a certain temperature regime. However, in such a situation, oral arguments alone are not enough. Security personnel will ask you to present a document with a medical certificate confirming such a need.

In other cases, in order to avoid conflict situations and excessive attention during security checks before the flight, it is recommended to leave a metal vessel in the luggage compartment.

When choosing a thermos on an airplane for transporting liquids, you should approach this issue responsibly. One of the main criteria is the tightness of the lid. Otherwise, important documents and personal belongings from hand luggage run the risk of being damaged. Do not forget about the dimensions of the metal vessel. Even if there is an urgent need to carry a thermos with you on board the aircraft, you should choose a compact item that does not take up much space and will not arouse curiosity among others.

Can I carry an empty thermos in hand luggage?

Although for some this may seem inappropriate, many are concerned about this issue. This happens if a person is worried about the safety of a metal vessel in luggage. And while customs officials may have some questions about metal items in hand luggage, the ban on an empty beverage item does not apply.

There are also cases in practice when incompetent airport employees try to prevent the passage of steel containers even in situations permitted by the rules. Then you need to calmly pay attention to a list of prohibited items in hand luggage, because everything that is not prohibited is allowed.

Thus, the rules for air transportation of PJSC Aeroflot are publicly available on the company's website and are regularly updated. The last changes were made in February 2016.
