Thermoses-jugs: characteristics, overview of models and selection rules
It is well known that a thermos is called a special heat-insulating dish. It is able to maintain a higher or lower temperature of food products compared to the ambient temperature indicator for a long time. Nowadays, modern manufacturers produce many options for thermal dishes, one of them is a thermos jug. It is used for storage and transportation of tea, coffee, cocoa, milk, juices, fruit drinks, lemonade, kvass, herbal infusions; in thermoses-coffee pots you can brew coffee.
Pitchers-thermoses are actively used by working people, but they are very convenient for children (they are produced specially in a smaller volume with metal flasks and a system that prevents splashing), and for the elderly.
Appearance and principle of operation
Outwardly, thermal jugs are similar to jugs or coffee pots, tapering upwards and having a wide bottom. They are divided into thermoses that keep the temperature of the drink, and thermal dishes in which you can brew coffee. The thermos jug consists of an external case and an internal flask; between the body and the flask there is a space that helps to maintain the temperature regime.
In vacuum thermoses, the air from the free space is pumped out.The cover attached to the body can be hinged or unscrewed; The handle of the thermo jug is made of a special insulating material, it does not heat up.
Materials for production
Both the outer body and the inner flask of thermoses-jugs can be made from various bases, which have their own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.
For the outer case, two types of materials are most often used.
- Metals. Such a body is characterized by high strength. Some thermal jugs are made with a double layer of metal and an additional air gap, which improves their thermal insulation properties.
- Plastic. For the manufacture of thermoses, durable plastic is used, which is resistant to high temperatures. Handles of thermal jugs are also made from this material, often a special type of plastic is used for this - bakelite, which has insulating properties.
Internal flasks are also of several types.
- Glass. Previously, thermos flasks were made only from this material. Glass is characterized by low thermal conductivity, is not affected by food acids, and is easy to clean. But it is a very fragile, short-lived material.
- From stainless steel. Stainless steel is a stronger material than glass. However, the inner flask, made of poor quality stainless steel, oxidizes easily, making drinks taste of iron.
- Plastic. This material is used in inexpensive thermal jugs. Such thermoses are short-lived, because due to temperature changes, their coating is deformed, and cracks form on the flask. It should also be taken into account that plastic, when heated, releases harmful substances that enter the liquid through cracks.

Buying advice
To make the right choice of high-quality and safe thermal jugs, carefully read the advice of experts.
- The larger the volume of the thermos jug, the longer it retains heat.
- Typically, the thermos manufacturer will put icons on the case indicating the types of food that can be stored in it.
- Do not pour carbonated water into a thermos, as it contains carbon dioxide and acids that destroy the metal.
- When choosing a thermos jug, be sure to open the lid of the model you like. The container should not have a sharp unpleasant odor. This is an indicator that the product is made from low quality materials.
- Remember that a considerable price and a well-known brand are a guarantee of high quality and safety of the product.
