World famous founder of the Unisex style
The world-famous founder of the Unisex style, Yves Saint Laurent, was born in Algeria in 1936. Even in the early years, the mother noticed creativity in the boy and tried to develop design skills in him. After the family moved to Paris at the age of 18, Yves is already professionally engaged in the development of fashionable clothes.
At the same time, he is noticed by the already famous fashion designer Christian Dior, who takes the young master to his assistant. And in 1957, after the death of Dior, Saint Laurent became the full art director of the Christian Dior Fashion House.
A year later, the fashion designer presented his first own collection of dresses for girls from light fabrics and dresses without waists. The lineup was named "Trapeze" and was enthusiastically received by the public.
After the first debut, Saint Laurent took the bold step of creating the "Beatnik" collection, in which the girls were dressed in leather rocker jackets and biker helmets. This challenge was not received positively by fashion critics of the time, and the young fashion designer had to leave Christian Dior.
Saint Laurent does not despair and creates his own Fashion House Yves Saint Laurent, which a little later will become world famous thanks to the YSL brand logo. In the 60s, he created several popular collections, which were appreciated by both critics and fashionistas: "Forest Robin", "Bambara", "Safari", "Leitmotif".At the same time, the original Rive Gauche perfume line was released.
Fans of the YSL style celebrate rigor in clothes and, along with it, elegance, precision cut using luxurious and bright fabrics. Dresses for women from the Yves collections can be used for business meetings, romantic dates, and catwalk shows. Guided by the principle of "Beauty without frills", the couturier created clothes that emphasize impeccable style and are very seductive for men.
In 1971, the fashion guru creates a fundamentally new Unisex style that blurs the line between male and female. Clothes, shoes, and later cosmetics and perfumes lose signs of gender.
Initially, such a bold decision was critically received by the world community. But the social trends that arose in the second half of the 20th century: the hippie and feminist movements, the struggle for gender equality were the reason for the development of the "Unisex" concept. Women strove not only to be seductive in their outfits, but also to wear what was convenient, practical, and comfortable.
In the following decades, Yves Saint Laurent continues to refer to the principles of "Unisex" in his collections, creating new masterpieces. In the 90s, this style reaches its peak of development: more and more fashion designers from all over the world turn to it. And Saint Laurent, at the same time, creates new items for pop and movie stars, develops shoes and perfumes.
In 1999, the YSL brand goes to Gucci, and by 2002, Yves Saint Laurent leaves the world of high fashion, leaving behind a huge legacy and fundamentally new approaches to the development of women's clothing, shoes, perfumes and accessories.
Style concepts
The impetus for the development of this style was given by the change in the male and female roles in society at the turn of the 60s and 70s. The feminist movement and the struggle for women's rights have caused the development of popularity among women for practical and comfortable men's clothing and uniforms. The girls wanted to wear not only seductive and elegant outfits, but also practical wardrobe items that are convenient for walking, playing sports, driving a car.
Such trends in public life could not be overlooked by fashion designers. The creator of the Unisex style, Yves Saint Laurent, put forward new models of trousers, shirts, pullovers and jackets on the world catwalks. The women's trouser suit developed by him became world famous. Subsequently, his principles spread to accessories and shoes, hairstyles, perfumes and makeup.
Jeans are considered to be the first items from the Unisex range. Fashion for them appeared even before the collections of Saint Laurent in the mid-60s of the last century. The slogan "for him and for her" became the motto of cowboy clothing, labor and informal movements. Indeed, the then models of jeans were produced without distinction of gender, there were no visual differences, for example, the left or right fastening. Therefore, representatives of the progressive youth boldly walked around in men's trousers, and no one saw anything reprehensible in this.
Shoes without stilettos and heels, in which you can comfortably stay all day, have become another defining feature of the Unisex style. Women began to walk confidently in sneakers and sneakers, men's low shoes. Practical and harmless style migrated to the catwalks and fashion world shows. And later, new items of "genderless" shoes appeared in women's wardrobes: uggs, timberlands, felt boots and rubber boots.
Ugg boots - originally men's boots made of sheep's wool for Australian farmers have become insanely popular these days. Timberlands are heavy military-style laced boots. And rubber boots with a bright pattern or pattern and stylish felt boots in bright colors will not be missed by any fashionista today.
Stylish outfit options
If at the birth of the Unisex style, women tried to emphasize their emancipation and feminist views with their appearance, today they dress like this mainly for convenience and everyday practicality. The mistress of the outfit wants to look flawless and attractive and, at the same time, not feel discomfort.
One of the most popular outfits today is the versatile denim set: jacket, trousers, vest and shirt. Fabrics should be selected not too defiant colors, light colors. A loose-fitting tie hanging loosely around the neck and a hat with a brim matching the color of the main suit are perfect for such clothes.
Perhaps the most common unisex clothing material is denim. In one form or another, every woman wore them, even without knowing about the existence of this style. Pair classic blue jeans and a jacket with sneakers for an elegant, casual look that's especially relevant to young people.
The tuxedo with trousers and women's pant suits in dark business tones, created by Saint Laurent back in the 70s, remain unfailingly popular today. They perfectly emphasize the business style and add a certain sophistication to the appearance of any lady. And trousers with a YSL jacket are very well used at a banquet, meeting or an important meeting.
For the one who founded the Unisex style, all fashion items of clothing, shoes and accessories were the fruits of many years of painstaking work. Yves Saint Laurent admitted that out of several thousand sketches he developed, he chose only dozens of the most successful ones - only they were published. Therefore, many consider his collections to be unique masterpieces in the fashion world.
