From time immemorial, people have been warmed with the help of wool. The first felted products were created in the 4th century BC, and they are still very popular.

Features and benefits of wet felting

Indeed, felted wardrobe items have a rich history, however, they have never been as skillful as they are today. What is the collection of Selina and Maja Debowski from Poland worth, which includes felted scarves in a combined technique with images of animals.

Like thousands of years ago, there are two felting techniques: dry and wet. As a result of wet felting, scarves, hats are created in a monochromatic range or with a soft color transition. By means of dry felting, decorations for such products appear, for example, flowers or muzzles of animals, like those of Polish designers.

Each of the methods is based on the entanglement of unspun wool fibers. In wet felting, attributes such as:

  • wool, any other fibers, such as silk, linen;
  • soap;
  • a special apparatus for felting or a stick or rolling pin.

Products made by craftsmen by hand are unusually soft and plastic. In addition, creating a scarf, you can make it for different seasons. So, felting wool on a thin silk fabric, a soft and light summer scarf is born, charming with the beauty of a felted pattern.Merino wool is suitable for warm options.

Advantages of a scarf made using the wet felting technique:

  • the scarf is unpretentious in care. Putting it in your purse, you can not be afraid of jams and irreparable creases. A light pat on the fold with wet hands will give the product a presentable look;
  • a felted scarf, due to its density, sits rather loosely on the neck, which allows you not to sweat in stuffy rooms;
  • the shape and design of a felted scarf can be easily changed by adding an ornament and drawings using the dry felting technique, cutting off the edges or completely removing the extra width;
  • felt scarf is durable. It will not appear pilling after wearing for several seasons;
  • felt does not accumulate static voltage, which means that you do not need to worry about the beauty of styling.

Fashion trends

Modern needlewomen and designers today are experimenting in the technique of felting, choosing non-standard fabrics, prints and textures. Surprisingly, things are made from wool that are unrecognizably different from each other.

From felt

A felt scarf is a product that keeps its shape well. Thanks to this property, craftsmen produce various models, sometimes of a decorative nature.

For example, patterns in the form of rose flowers are assembled from round small felted plates. Speaking of warm models, a felted scarf has the shape of a collar on a large button or hook. Such a warm accessory is convenient in the absence of a collar on outerwear.

gossamer

As mentioned earlier, various yarn fibers are added to wool today. From mohair and lace with the addition of wool, viscose and linen, a unique soft product called gossamer is created.Why gossamer? Color-contrasting fibers are laid out in rings, resulting in an ornate pattern reminiscent of this delicate and beautiful natural matter.

An interesting feature of the model is its translucency. Throwing it over your shoulders, you can avoid massiveness, while providing yourself with warmth.

Cabbage

Felted scarf "cabbage" looks elegant and graceful and by no means corresponds to its simple name. It is not a shame to put on such a “cabbage” for a celebration, because its shuttlecocks look festive and very original.

The model is made of pure wool using wet felting technique. The product turns out to be short, and on both sides of the scarf there are voluminous soft flounces, exactly the same as on cabbage leaves. Craftsmen use additional decor in the form of flowers, buttons or hooks to better maintain shape.

On silk

The pattern of wool on a silk basis has become widespread, because the scope of imagination here is unusually wide. Drawings in the form of coffee beans, fluffy dandelions and other feminine patterns are made on white silk. The model on silk is light and soft. You can drape such a scarf around your neck, like any silk scarf.

On gauze

Interestingly, wet felting is a very democratic art of creating unique things. Expensive silk fabric can be replaced with 100% cotton gauze and create an incredibly luxurious product.

Patterns of thin layers of yarn in contrasting shades are clinging to the gauze. Later, after the wet felting is completed, patterns can also be applied with a felting needle, for example, voluminous petals and all kinds of flowers.

The product made of gauze is much softer than a felt scarf, which allows you to tie it in various ways.

What to wear

Felted scarves are a piece of art, so it's best not to hide it under your clothes. Felted stoles are laid over outerwear, creating beautiful assemblies. A stylish felt scarf is placed over a small stand-up collar, giving an updated look to the product. Silk scarves are loosely wrapped around the neck, showing a felted pattern.

Today, designers recommend combining felted scarves not only with outerwear. So, a plain jacket with a V-neck will be transformed if you add it with a felted scarf. Designer scarves from Debowski are completely combined with bustier dresses.
