Types of combs
Luxurious shine and healthy strength of our curls depend on proper nutrition and quality systematic care. A well-chosen comb also plays a significant role in this, which is also necessary for regular blow-drying, and for uniform coloring, and for curling curls, and for stylish evening styling, and for gently detangling wet or fluffy strands, and even for banal morning combing. Moreover, the type of comb for each individual type of care needs a special one. Learning to understand all their diversity and choose the right one for the type, length and density of hair is not so difficult. And the best clue here is the comb itself, or rather, its appearance.
Types and application
All types of combs can be classified according to three parameters: material, form and functionality. Although there are original examples - tiny combs for eyebrows and mini-brushings for eyelashes, elegant combs for mustaches and beards and combs with mustaches for hair extensions, soft massages for stroking the scalp and gentle brushes for babies. Moreover, the design of the comb is the tenth thing. The main thing is its excellent quality and suitability for the purpose.
materials
quality wooden combs easy to identify by a smooth handle without nicks and cracks and a pleasant aroma. They will smell not like varnish, not glue and not a rubberized base for a comb, but the wood from which they are made: sandalwood, cherry, ash, juniper, beech, pine, oak, bamboo, peach or birch. The teeth are usually also made of wood or natural bristle (for example, horse or boar), which is very effective at detangling medium-length hair and is ideal for thin and brittle hair, but combing thick and thick hair is no longer possible for her, and she is also for long curls. does not fit. And yet, wooden combs are loved by many for their aesthetics, reliability, environmental friendliness, and also for the fact that the strands do not electrify at all. However, they are not used in hairdressing salons, since it is impossible to process them, as required by sanitary standards.
metal combs durable, practical and completely non-electrified. Good for short haircuts, parting hair into strands and unraveling long curls. Thinning is convenient for trimming bangs, processing split ends and thinning thick strands. Metal combs are suitable for hairdressers, as carefully crafted and very functional. But with inept use of their sharp teeth, you can destroy the hair structure and injure the scalp, therefore they are contraindicated for combing thin, colored and damaged curls.
Plastic combs usually the most brittle and highly prone to static effect, although they are easy to use and maintain, are sanitized, suitable for any length and density of hair and are quite affordable. Their design and color implementation is striking in variety. In addition, it is plastic that is most often used to make floppy combs in the shape of a knife or a butterfly, which are popular with men, and combined brushes with a mirror or compact folding massages, which are like a hedgehog "needles inward", loved by girls.
Silicone combs are not subject to static, do not injure the scalp and hair structure - after combing them, the strands shine and flow gently. Silicone combs are not afraid of chemicals, so they are used in salons to help in winding hair on perm curlers, as well as to distribute paints, masks, and foams through strands. Silicone combs are perhaps the cheapest of all.
Carbon base combs are usually protected by ceramic coating, do not require maintenance, retain their excellent quality and neat appearance for a long time. In hairdressing salons, carbon and ceramic combs are used during coloring or blow-drying (they are not afraid of chemicals and heat) and graduated or very short haircuts (glide through the hair easily and smoothly), as well as for parting and combing strands (no static effect).
Horn and bone combs have been known since the time of the pharaohs and are still justifiably considered the most beautiful, durable and functional. And decorated with a filigree ornament, and even complete with a mirror and jewelry, they are not just a convenient and practical accessory, but also a welcome decoration for the most demanding ladies, and an exquisite collectible. By the way, both the handle, the base for the brush, and the teeth are cut out of the bones and horns of animals.
In addition, comb teeth are made of ebonite (to eliminate static effect), carbon fiber (to give hair shine, softness and silkiness without the use of cosmetics), silicone (for combing curls), nylon (for weakened and thin strands) and natural bristles (for easy detangling of thin, fluffy and brittle hair and saturating them with creatine). Among the new products are silicone teeth, interspersed with microfiber in the form of soft antennae (to absorb moisture from wet hair).
And for connoisseurs of the beautiful and unique, they have long been invented painted ceramic, forged bronze and cast silver and gold combs and combs. Those made of precious metals are often one-of-a-kind and adorned with no less precious stones, gems or the owner's monogram.
Form and purpose
Each hairdresser selects a whole arsenal of stylish and diverse professional combs for work. They always have a clear purpose and are quite expensive, because they are made of first-class materials with comfortable non-slip handles and the smoothest possible surfaces. Although in everyday life more than half of them are not used.
In order to independently select those that are exactly needed for daily use, styling, backcombing or curling, a detailed description of all varieties of carding tools ever created is not required. It is enough to understand what form of comb is intended for.
Crest - a small flat comb with frequent or sparse teeth on one or two sides. From natural (wood, bones, horns and shells of animals) or artificial materials (metal alloys, plastic). With an oblong handle, or in the form of a long narrow tail, or without it at all. It can be a hard thinning or soft for coloring, as well as a throw-away part of a folding comb beloved by men in the shape of a knife or boomerang. In the form of a comb, it is slightly curved and is often an adornment of a woman's hairstyle.
The comb-comb is one of the most ancient and still relevant. Indispensable for cutting, trimming cuts, creating bouffants and evenly applying paints, oils, masks and styling products. Good for combing hair of medium length and short, with sparse teeth it perfectly combs and smoothes thick and long hair, but it is inconvenient for tight curls. Frequent comb - soft and thin hair, rare - thick and hard. With a knitting needle at the end or with a narrow handle in the shape of a trident or fork - for working with fasteners of hair extensions, dividing into strands and creating a parting.
Massage (bombing) - a comb with a long handle and a wide base for a "cushion" with a textile or rubberized coating, densely or loosely studded with teeth made of wood, metal, plastic or silicone. The standard length of the teeth is 1 or 2 centimeters. The base for them is rectangular with rounded edges or oval, as well as large, small, folding and combined. It differs in the degree of elasticity - soft, medium, hard.
The good old anti-stress massage is in almost every home. Its name eloquently hints at the true purpose - to always give pleasure from the pleasant process of stimulating blood circulation during gentle, skin-massaging, detangling, delightful combing, diligent smoothing and brilliant polishing of strands of any length, density and structure. One drawback - along with bliss and goosebumps, it evenly distributes sebum over itself and hair, which means they will have to be washed more often, and the massage should also be disinfected.
Comb-brush differs from the usual massage in the presence of natural (horse, pig or wild boar) or synthetic bristles, which densely and gently replaces rare and hard teeth.
The brush, as its name implies, is good at combing and smoothing strands. It requires the same thorough care as a massage. Suitable for thin straight and easily tangled strands, but completely unsuitable for thick, hard and curly - the bristles of even the wildest boar in the world will not comb through them.
The foundation skeletal comb with a long semicircular handle is made in the form of a flat or double-convex base with different-sized or identical holes in it and with dense bristles or sparse spikes of different lengths attached on one or both sides, between which hot air from a hair dryer circulates freely. Earned its nickname "fish bone" because of its resemblance to a gnawed fish bone. It is also called purge thermal brushing.
Good for drying and creating volume at the roots, as well as for gently detangling curls. Not suitable for sophisticated styling that requires careful work and polishing with an iron or pulling with tongs. But for the fast and slightly careless - just a godsend. As well as for combing short haircuts or lush curls of medium length.
Semicircular comb, or nine-row - so named because of the semicircularity of its base, on which long thick teeth are fixed in 7 or 9 rows located at a considerable distance from each other.
With a semicircular comb, bangs are easily pulled out or twisted and short and medium haircuts (bobs and bob) are easily styled. It fits comfortably in the hand, but the plastic teeth strongly electrify the strands. And if the teeth are also metal and without balls at the ends, then they noticeably scratch the skin.
Tunnel comb (narrow brushing) similar to a long, round plastic stick, one half of which is a handle and the other half of which is hedgehog-like due to the teeth or tufts of bristles attached. The thoughtful design of the teeth with protective balls at the ends and the hollow base with many holes for better air circulation allow the tunnel combs not to overheat and not injure the skin and hair.
The tunnel comb is ideal for curling curls and creating impressive volume at the beginning of hair growth, although for daily use it is not always convenient (long strands cling and tangle). With a small diameter, it is indispensable for winding thin tight curls on medium length hair and modeling bangs. If, under a gentle stream of a hair dryer, wind the bangs onto such a comb and pull it out a little, while slightly lifting it up, it will be fluffy, and if you pull it forward and slightly down, it will be straight.
Cylindrical comb (brushing) similar to the tunnel, only much larger than it in diameter.Excellent heated ceramic and base metal with thin steel, synthetic or combined teeth are good for curling curls along the entire length. And the natural brushing bristles miraculously create a basal volume and twist the ends of the strands in or out.
The diameter of the cylindrical comb is matched to the length of the hair - the shorter they are, the narrower the brushing and the tighter the curls. The density of the bristles is related to the structure of the hair: the thicker they are, the less often and longer the teeth are needed, and vice versa. Luxurious large waves and a noticeable volume will help create brushing of a large diameter. It is enough to carefully wind the strands, dry it with a hairdryer, carefully release it from the comb and wave your head a couple of times - and the magnificent lion's mane is ready.
But such brushes, excellent in all respects, have one significant drawback - they are not easy to keep clean (especially metal ones): the remnants of skin and fat, as well as fallen hair and settled dust, are cleaned from their thin bristles with great difficulty even under high water pressure.
Combination comb universal, necessary for everyone who has hair. The best incarnations are made of carbon or silicone.
Its two-sided blowing base with alternating frequent and rare hard spikes with safe balls at the ends is excellent in everyday combing, and in hot or cold styling.
How to choose
- Thick hair is better combed with different-sized teeth of combined combs.
- For thin fluffy and curly hair, there is nothing better than a massage with soft natural bristles and wire and plastic teeth are extremely contraindicated.
- Oily hair is best combed with wooden frequent combs.
- And for tight curls, brittle or wet strands, combs with widely spaced teeth or soft massages are suitable.
