People have different attitudes towards spending the night in tents: someone is attracted by the thought of spending time outdoors in a spartan setting, while someone is horrified by this thought alone. One way or another, this tourist destination takes place, people can just go on vacation, spend time with their families or go fishing. But in the cold season, the question arises of how not to freeze at night on a hike. Answers and ways how to heat a tent, we will consider in our article.

    Why is heating important?

Fighting low air temperatures in nature in winter not only creates a comfortable environment for spending time, but in some cases even helps to survive. This is especially true for fishermen who can be on the ice in any weather. If only a couple of hours are given to this lesson, and the thermometer shows no lower than -10 degrees, a special fishing suit with fleece, thermal underwear and warm gloves will suffice. But in colder weather, problems can arise, and you have to think about how to warm up additionally.

In addition, the wind is very strong on the open water, you can freeze in a matter of minutes, so a tent with a heater is an indispensable thing.Even if initially there are no severe manifestations of frostbite, they can appear over time, so you should take care in advance about a remedy that is not only able to preserve health, but sometimes even save a life.

However, fishermen are not the only category at risk. In spring and autumn, it is quite cool at night, and many companies at this time like to relax in the forest or on the banks of water bodies. Of course, everyone dresses warmly for such outings, but at sub-zero temperatures in a tent, clothing is not the most reliable assistant.

In addition, you should think about waking up, because it’s much more pleasant to wake up in a warm place, when it’s cozy enough in a sleeping bag, and steam doesn’t come out of your mouth.

    Ways to organize heating

Means that help to heat the tent in cold weather are very diverse and are presented in a large assortment on the shelves of specialized stores. However, such a device can be made with your own hands, using materials that are at hand. But in any case, it must be borne in mind that the main condition is that fresh air constantly enters the tent.

In addition, in order to warm up faster, it will not be superfluous to pre-insulate the shelter. To do this, the bottom of the tent is sprinkled with snow or fallen leaves, which will prevent the wind from blowing. The floor is best covered with a mat. For single-layer tents, it will not be superfluous to fix the awning on the surface.

Regardless of which heating method will be used, we must not forget about the basic requirements that apply to heating devices. They should be small enough to fit easily inside the tent, not too heavy, reliable and safe to use. In addition, attention should be paid to the performance and efficiency of devices, the availability of fuel to them, if necessary, versatility, as well as ease of operation.

Which heater to use - purchased or made independently - everyone decides for himself. Each of the methods has its positive and negative sides. Let's talk about the most common ones below.

    Petrol and gas heaters

Fishermen and tourists often use heating devices with a gas burner. Such heaters have a simple design, in addition, they do not take up much space and are quite enough to heat a small tent.

In this case, it must be borne in mind that there will not be much sense from the burner itself. It simply heats the air, which will be mixed by convection. In order to heat a large space, there is a special nozzle on the burner. She will collect heat and gradually give it to the air around.

The nozzle determines the type of heater itself. It can be made of metal or ceramic. In addition, there are independent heaters that have a working fluid made of the same materials as the nozzle.

A heater with a metal working medium can be either independent or in the form of a nozzle. The second option has the nuances of use, because the nozzle is heated, but at the same time remains not closed by anything. It is not recommended to use such a device at night when everyone is sleeping. In this case, it is better to use an independent device.

Independent heaters with a metal working fluid have their advantages. Their danger zone is protected from contact with other objects, in addition, they are quite stable. There can be either one or two burners, each of which works independently of each other. Heat can be directed in the desired direction, since the design has a reflector that acts on thermal radiation. Such devices are manufactured by both Russian and foreign manufacturers.

Among the advantages of these devices, it can be noted that their design is quite simple, the price is quite budgetary, and the safety is at a high level. However, they are not economical enough and do not give off too much heat.

A heater with a ceramic working fluid can give off much more heat than in the case of the previous version. The efficiency of the device is evident. The ceramic plate in appearance is somewhat reminiscent of a honeycomb; on its surface, the combustion process itself takes place. This is much more efficient than an open flame situation and allows up to 50 percent of the combustion energy to be released.

In addition to cost-effectiveness, one of the advantages of such devices is their compactness and unpretentiousness in use. However, during combustion, carbon monoxide is released.

The principle of operation of gasoline heaters is not too different from gas ones. They are affordable, affordable, and can work in all weather conditions. This is a tangible plus, since gas devices do not tolerate low temperatures. However, gasoline itself is a rather dangerous type of fuel, so working with it requires great care, otherwise it can lead to sad consequences.

    Solid fuel stoves

The principle of operation is that solid fuel is placed in the combustion chamber. However, this method has its drawbacks. For example, in such conditions, a fire can very easily occur, that is, a tourist needs to constantly keep his finger on the pulse, watching the stove and throwing in new fuel so that the temperature stays at a certain level.

Potbelly stove considered one of the most efficient tent heating devices. There is an army and tourist, while the second, of course, is much smaller, but the very essence of the work does not depend on the dimensions. For a small tent, simpler methods are suitable, installing a stove will take time and monitoring its work, however, it can also warm a fairly large space.

It cannot be said that a rich assortment of such goods is presented on the modern market, but there is still a choice. Some models are adapted to work with gasoline or gas. Usually a collapsible metal chimney is included, but it does not weigh too much.

    Candles

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to keep warm in a tent is with regular paraffin candles. But this option should be considered mainly in autumn and spring, as well as on too cold summer nights. The fact is that at temperatures below -5 degrees, warming yourself with candles is already useless.

In order to try this method in action, you will need to make a hanging case for each of the candles. A tin can is quite suitable - the metal will heat up from the flame and actively give off heat. In addition, the fire will be safely hidden from surrounding objects.

Candles placed in such cases are lit and hung around the perimeter of the tent.

It must be taken into account that the effectiveness of the method directly depends on how many candles will be placed in the tent. The more of them, the faster the heating process will go. If several candles fit in the case at once, this will significantly reduce the heating time of the space. For maximum effect, it is better to build several such devices.

Among the advantages of heating a tent with candles, one can note the simplicity of this method and the low material costs of its implementation. However, the disadvantage is the low heat transfer of one candle.

    Kerosene lamp

Previously, kerosene lamps and stoves were used to heat a small space quite often. Now tourists prefer to use other methods, but this method is still in use. Especially often, fishermen who go fishing in the cold season resort to kerosene stoves.

This method has its pros and cons. First of all, this is the compactness of the heating device and its high thermal conductivity. A kerosene stove heats up the space around it quickly enough. At the same time, the use of such lamps indoors is associated with a fire hazard. In addition, their operating time is limited, and when burning, a kerosene lamp emits an unpleasant odor.

This method is suitable for any type of tent: both for having a floor and without it. The fire is covered with glass, which is also an advantage. In addition to the lamp itself, you will also need kerosene on which it will work, and a spare wick. It should be borne in mind that a lot of fuel is not required, the main condition is that the wick reaches it and can be soaked.

However, in our time, without a kerosene lamp available, it is quite difficult to acquire such a rarity.

How not to get burned in a tent?

For those who are going to spend the night in a tent heated by heaters, the main concern will be to make sure that the night passes without fumes. It is this moment that is most often the cause of accidents when a person in a dream is poisoned by combustion products. Therefore, first of all, you should take care of at least minimal ventilation, because without it the risk of getting burned in a tent is quite large. This happens because the concentration of oxygen in the air inhaled by a person indoors decreases very quickly.

However, this problem is very easy to avoid. To do this, you just need to follow some rules. Which one, let's talk in more detail.

    • You should not achieve maximum tightness even for a winter tent. No matter how tightly it is closed, fresh air must still flow inside. The best solution would be periodic ventilation, at least for a not too long time.
    • If, while in a heated tent, a person feels unwell, symptoms such as dizziness or lack of oxygen appear, it is urgent to go outside. Fresh air can quickly bring to life. In addition, burners should not be left unattended for long periods of time.
    • Finally, the main advice given by experts is not to sleep with the heaters on. It is better to think about this in advance and bring the temperature in the tent to the desired level, after which you can turn off all devices and calmly get ready for bed.

Of course, there is a risk that the room will have time to cool down overnight, but first of all - personal safety.
