Ancient Greece gave the world not only a huge number of myths, literary and architectural works, but also a unique Greek style of dress. In ancient Greece, external beauty was elevated to a cult, so they tried to emphasize it by all available means. This attitude to appearance is reflected in the national costumes of this hot country with a rich history.

A bit of history

Initially, national Greek outfits were very simple, but at the same time elegant. In ancient times, clothing was functional and comfortable. Even the costume of the Greek goddess and god in the descriptions and engravings is not particularly luxurious - a simple white robe with a small amount of jewelry.

In those days, the traditional women's outfit was an elegant tunic, and the warrior's attire was a short, comfortable skirt. The townspeople wore chitons - loose-fitting outfits resembling a wide shirt with a belt. Completed it all with sandals. The nobility, as elsewhere, stood out from the rest of the classes by the presence of expensive jewelry and richly embroidered robes.

A feature of the ancient Greek costume is the absence of a headdress. The only exception is flower decorations, which girls used to decorate their hairstyles.Another interesting point is that in ancient Greek society, girls wore fitted outfits before marriage, changing them to high-waisted dresses after marriage.

The transition of Greece to Christianity influenced not only the religious life of the population, but also the local fashion. The outfits of the Greeks became closed, hats came into use. But it should be noted that the national Greek costume in its modern form came precisely from these times. However, it is available in several varieties.

Varieties

  • Men's options The national costume in Greece was divided not only into everyday and festive ones. Representatives of different classes and professions had their own outfits, different from others.
  1. Thus, representatives of the National Guard in this country wear Fustanella Zolias - a special costume consisting of a pleated skirt and a loose shirt with a belt. This outfit got its name because of the special skirt. It was called "fustanella" and consisted of 400 folds, which symbolized the number of years that the country spent under Turkish rule. Such a skirt, combined with a white shirt, belted with a wide belt, was worn by warriors who fought against foreign invaders.
  2. Another men's suit is vraka. It was more common and was found at many celebrations, including weddings. It consists of a white shirt, baggy black pants (koumbouri), a red belt with a long fringe, a dark jacket, and a cap that looks like a cap.
  • Women's suits also differed from each other. The traditional Greek dress is not only a flowing white tunic in which the goddesses of Olympus were depicted. The national costume of the Greek woman consisted of an underdress, a long skirt, a shirt with wide sleeves and an apron, which sometimes covered not only the front of the outfit, but also the back.

A part of the female national costume in Greece is a massive headdress decorated with heavy tassels and monists.

Peculiarities

Colors and shades

The main color of traditional Greek dresses is white. Jewelry, as a rule, was made of gold. They added brightness to the outfits with colored embroidery. Also part of many later costumes are dark vests and bright sashes of predominantly red.

Fabrics and fit

With fabrics, things are a little more complicated. Indeed, despite the fact that Greece can be called a country with a hot climate, many elements of the national costume are made of fairly warm materials, such as felt or wool.

However, the dresses of the Greek women, on the contrary, were created from thin airy fabrics that could drape the figure, creating a truly divine silhouette.

The styles of Greek dresses are extremely simple. They emphasize the smooth lines of the female body, while not focusing on the shortcomings of the figure.

Also, Greek traditional dresses are characterized by asymmetry. This approach distinguishes Greek dresses from other national costumes.

Accessories and shoes

The decorations used by the Greeks in the national costume have always been distinguished by sophistication. A tasteful necklace, a few thin bracelets or earrings added to the image of luxury. At the same time, it was not customary to combine several jewelry at once in one image. Jewelry in the Greek style, as a rule, is massive and very distinctive, so when you combine a large number of them, the image may turn out to be too lurid.

Sandals have always been traditional Greek footwear. A flat sole and a large number of straps make this type of shoe not only elegant, but also very comfortable. And convenience played an important role for the Greeks.

Greek style in the modern world

Now Greek-style costumes are part of the rich history of the country and at the same time inspire designers from all over the world to create new masterpieces of fashion art.

The antique style is most often taken as the basis, which is distinguished by its particular lightness and sophistication. Modern fashionistas like to try on the outfits of the Olympic goddesses, because they always present the figure in a favorable light.

Dresses in the Greek style are distinguished by a free cut. The lower part of the dress is often complemented by folds and drapery.

A popular option is models with a high waist. It is these dresses that allow you to emphasize the femininity of the image, without violating the symmetry of the silhouette and without emphasizing the presence of extra centimeters on the body.

Long dresses in the Greek style are now in trend. They are worn not only for a party or corporate event, but for such important events as graduation or wedding. Designers pleasantly delight us with interpretations of the traditional Greek dress. Dresses are very feminine and romantic, but at the same time, they fit perfectly into modern realities.

Simpler skirts and cropped dresses in the Greek style are also popular. They can be worn in hot summer, combined with sandals or high heels. When sewing, light fabrics of pastel shades are used, which makes skirts and dresses so feminine and attractive for girls and women of different ages and social status.

Greek style today continues to gain popularity, both in everyday and in wedding and evening fashion. Perhaps, having familiarized yourself with its history and features, you will want to try on the image of a luxurious Greek goddess.
