Engraving on rings
The ring is not only a stylish decoration that can complement your image, making it unique and attractive, but also a symbol full of sacred meaning.
From ancient times, rings were considered signs of love and friendship, power and might, some of them meant belonging to a certain family.
A variety of decoration variations allow you to create real jewelry works of art. However, special attention deserves such a processing method as engraving.
History and legends
The idea of engraving rings is not new. Its history dates back to the reign of King Solomon. One version of the famous legend tells that the great king, being burdened with spiritual experiences, turned to the sages for advice, and one of them presented him with a gift in the form of a ring with the inscription "This will pass."
This inscription calmed the king in times of unrest, but one day in anger he wanted to get rid of the ring. In a fit of rage, Solomon removed the jewelry and saw the inscription inside it, "This too shall pass."
Such a sacred message reassured the ruler and since then this jewelry masterpiece has become his personal talisman, helping him to remain calm and wise.
Another version, taken from Jewish sources, says that the secret name of God was inscribed on the famous ring of Solomon, which gave its owner unsurpassed wisdom.
During the Middle Ages, Europeans took over from the Egyptians to wear rings.
Then they came up with the idea of personalizing these jewelry by applying engravings to them.
The noble houses of France and England had specially trained jewelers who made such rings. Family ornaments with inscriptions and drawings applied to them were passed down from generation to generation.
Louis XIV was the owner of a whole collection of such jewelry and gave his favorites a ring with an engraving on the inside as a symbol of special affection for them.
A little later, the idea of engraving wedding rings became widespread. They were applied either the names of the spouses, or oaths of love and fidelity. Moreover, the most popular option was the idea of engraving exactly its inner part, since it was believed that this was of a more intimate nature, since only the direct owner of the jewelry could see the applied symbols.
In the Baroque era, chasing and casting were especially widespread. At the same time, the first machines for engraving appeared, and the emerging guilloche technique expanded the possibilities for decorating jewelry.
Nowadays, engraved rings are no less popular. Jewelry companies annually release exclusive new items of this type. In addition, in specialized workshops you can order engraving according to your own sketch.
Kinds
To date, there are several types of engraving rings that differ in processing technology.
- Manual. The oldest method that does not lose its relevance and value today. It is carried out with the help of special hand tools - chisels. The entire engraving process is carried out manually, so the price for this type of work is much higher.
This method requires exceptional accuracy and skill, the slightest mistake and the product will be hopelessly damaged. However, it is with the help of this method that the most unique and highly artistic drawings and inscriptions are obtained.
- Mechanical. One of the easiest and cheapest engraving methods. It is carried out on a special machine. A characteristic drawback is the impossibility of performing convex, voluminous drawings. In addition, such an engraving can only be done on a perfectly flat surface, which, moreover, is also limited by the size of the machine.
- Diamond. It is carried out by a special machine equipped with a diamond needle exclusively on flat, glossy surfaces.
Due to the absence of chemical reagents in the process, the resulting pattern is not erased, does not fade, does not lose its luster.
- Laser. Ultra-modern technology, which is predicted for a great future. Under the action of a laser beam, pointwise heating the working surface, metal melting processes occur, as well as its color and texture change.
As a result, cavities are formed, from which the author, according to his idea, composes a composition. This method is ideal for engraving both the inner surface of the ring and the outer one. In addition, this technology virtually eliminates inaccuracies, errors and damage, because the movement of the beam is directed exactly along the trajectory laid down by the computer program, according to a pre-selected sketch.
So, engraving differs in the way the image is applied.
- Embossed. It is applied to the outer side of the decoration by cutting off individual fragments of the material. The result is a three-dimensional surface relief that forms a pattern. Most often, such engraving is applied manually or with a laser.
- Deep. Achieved by applying recesses to the surface of the metal. This is mainly diamond and mechanical processing.
Artistic options
The variety of ideas for engraving rings is limited only by the imagination of the authors and the surface area of the ring itself.
Many ask to perform not only names or phrases, but also a variety of symbols, drawings, plot sketches.
Romantic natures order engravings in the form of hearts, ribbons, flowers, doves, etc.
Esotericists and mystics are in a hurry to boast of rings and rings decorated with intricate symbols of deep, sacred meaning. Among fans of fantasy, a model of the Ring of Omnipotence from the famous saga of S. Tolkien has become popular.
Creative personalities most often prefer to apply catchphrases in Latin, and Orthodox believers opt for a ring with a sentence-prayer "Save and save."
Definitely, the version of the drawing and the inscription determines the character and mood of its owner.
The idea of engraving wedding rings is becoming more and more popular every day.
The names of the spouses, the dates of the wedding, acquaintance, first date, words denoting memorable events that are important for the spouses are used. The original version is a two-part phrase, the first of which is applied to one ring, the second to the other.
In addition to the classic options for a wedding ring, composite engraved rings are common. In this case, the inscription or drawing is applied to the base, which is located under the surface of a wider ring. Both parts of the item are connected by a special fastener, which can be pushed aside to reveal the hidden engraving.
Tips
When you're about to engrave a ring, whether it's a bridal or stylized ring, there are a few things to consider carefully.
- Ring size. If the product is large or small for you, it is better to adjust the size before applying the drawing, because after engraving, changing the size of the ring will lead to distortion and deformation of the image.
- Choice of metal. When planning to engrave a ring, pay attention to the material from which it is made. Depending on this, the cost and complexity of the work will vary. The most budget option would be silver and jewelry steel. Tin and cupronickel are completely unsuitable for such work due to their softness. Gold items for engraving are preferable to choose 585 samples. On 950 rings, the design runs the risk of being distorted and blurred, since this material is too fusible and ductile for such an effect. Ideal for engraving platinum and palladium.
- The ratio of the number of characters and the width of the ring. If you have a standard product width, try to keep the phrase you want to apply as concise and short as possible. Some jewelers are able to inscribe in two lines, but in this case the font will be very small and difficult to read. The shorter and more concise the inscription, the more original the engraving itself will look.
- The meaning of the symbols. If you choose symbolism, be it runes or esoteric signs, it would be useful to learn more about their meaning, since not all of these symbols are aimed at attracting any benefits. For example, the inscription of the rune in the form of the Latin letter N (Hagalaz) is a symbol of destruction and mystics consider it unacceptable as a personal talisman. The same caution should be taken with foreign phrases. No matter how beautifully the letters are composed, you should first find out the translation and meaning.
